Vaux | Urban mass | 11-2004

One of the pleasures of Vaux was lying on the carpet and looking at the ceiling.

"A time of silent reflection, with an inevitable backdrop of passing traffic. Noise is created by movement: listen to it. Be tempted by its offers of journeys to elsewhere. But our shoes are off. We have committed to stay a while, and centre ourselves here."

Communion among the shoes. At the start of the service the congregation were invited to remove their shoes as a sign of commitment to staying. Somehow everyone interpreted that as "throw your shoes down thump! around the altar"!

The communion was two by two, in no particular order, each person receiving the elements and then waiting there to give to the next person to come up. But they had to clear space in the shoes.

The building was very dark, much more than it appears here, and I was astonished that the photos came out as sharp as they did.

What happens to the altar in alt worship. Vaux got into trouble with the new vicar for doing this!
